Don't forget THIS: otherwise your hearing aid will break! Tips & tricks for the maintenance of your hearing aid!

There is nothing more annoying than finding out on a Saturday night that your hearing aid no longer works just before you head off to a cosy birthday party. Fortunately, there are plenty of tools to help solve this problem. But what can you do to prevent your hearing aid from breaking? And what is really harmful for a hearing aid? After all, prevention is better than cure….

How to prevent your hearing aid from breaking down:

  • Put your hearing aid every day in a drying device preferably with UV light, this ensures that the hearing aid dries but it also kills all bacteria on the hearing aid at the same time.
  • If you wear a hearing aid with a custom-made earmold, the tubing can become very hard, causing the sound to shrink and ultimately making the hearing aid provide little or no amplification. Prevent this by having your tube replaced on time, you will notice the difference immediately!
  • If you have a hearing aid with a custom-made earpiece, clean it regularly; if the earpiece becomes clogged with earwax, you will no longer be able to hear the amplification of your hearing aid. It is best to clean your earpiece with an effervescent tablet and water, but make sure you only put your earpiece in the water and not your hearing aid as well. Afterwards, dry the earmold well with a suitable blower before placing it back on your hearing aid.

  • Do not use hairspray when you have your hearing aids in your ear, this will eventually coat the microphone and prevent the hearing aids from transmitting any sound at all. If you still want to use hairspray, do so when you do not have the hearing aids in your ear and wait until the hairspray has hardened.
  • Make sure that you replace the filter of your loudspeaker in time, because if you don’t do this, the filter will get clogged up with earwax and your hearing aid will no longer work. Fortunately, this is easily solved by replacing the filter (you can order these filters online).
  • Do you have a hearing aid with a universal dome? Then clean it every night with a cleaning cloth that is specially made for your hearing aids. Do not clean it with alcohol or other products, this could damage your hearing aid. Also have your dome replaced once every six months.
  • If you use rechargeable hearing aids, make sure that you keep the contacts of both the hearing aids and the charger clean. You can keep them clean by regularly rubbing a cotton swab with a little alcohol over them.
  • Keep your hearing aid away from your pet! What we have seen often enough is that a dog has eaten his owner’s hearing aid, if the hearing aid is still on and is put
  • down   somewhere it emits high-pitched tones which are very annoying to dogs and your dog will attack the hearing aid.
  • Do not drop your hearing aids on a hard surface, handle them with care and when not in use, put them in a special hearing aid box.

These were most of the points on how to prevent your hearing aid from breaking and how to fix it yourself if it does. If it still doesn’t work,

take the hearing aid to your hearing care professional who can check and fix it for you.
