Perhaps you recognise this: people around you have been telling you to get your ears tested for months, maybe even years. You’re not the only one! According to the psychology of the hard-of-hearing, on average it takes seven years until someone recognises that they have hearing loss and take a hearing test. A hearing care professional will do an extensive hearing test to identify your hearing loss. And what if you have hearing loss?
First, the hearing care professional will determine what kind of hearing loss you have incurred. In some cases, the hearing care professional will have to refer you to a specialist, but in many other cases he or she will be able to help you without consulting a specialist. The hearing care professional will explain your hearing loss and then tell you about hearing aids.
There are different types of hearing aids. The hearing care professional will first get an impression of your life and identify your most common problems, after which he or she will discuss the various types of hearing aids with you. For example, there are many different hearing aids brands, each with its own vision. Based on this conversation, the hearing care professional will provide advice on the hearing aid which they expect will suit you best. Your wishes will also be taken into account, of course: is it important to you, for example, that your hearing aid can be linked to your phone directly, enabling streaming and making phone calls? Or maybe that’s not what you’re looking for. You can opt for a hearing aid whose battery you’ll have to replace yourself, or a rechargeable one, so you’ll never run out of power. Maybe you want a hearing aid that is as small as possible. Or perhaps you don’t mind that people can see that you are wearing a hearing aid.

There are technologically very basic hearing aids, but also technologically very advanced ones. And the more advanced ones tend to be easier to operate. The most advanced hearing aids will effortlessly adjust to almost any hearing scenario. For example, you may be in a restaurant with poor acoustics and noisy guests, making it difficult to understand the person you are talking to. Your hearing aid will suppress the noise and focus on the person you wish to understand, so you can participate again, no matter what the situation is.
During your consultation, we will also choose what colour your hearing aid will be. You may, for example, choose to get one in that’s the colour of your hair, in order to camouflage it, but a bright colour, signalling clearly to people that you are wearing a hearing aid, is also an option.
